If you’re planning your trip to NYC but don’t know what to bring, we’ve got you covered with this NYC packing list! Undoubtedly, the weather in New York City is notoriously difficult to predict. For this reason, it’s a good idea to come prepared to get the most out of your NYC getaway.
Essentials to Pack for NYC

1. An Amazing Outfit
You’ll want to look your best in this city. Wear something that makes you feel confident. Check out this fabulous jumpsuit!
2. Packing Cubes
There’s a good reason why frequent travelers are obsessed with packing cubes. Organizing becomes a breeze when you use them because your items are compressed into cubes while classifying each clothing type.
3. Portable Charger
With a portable charger, you won’t have to worry about running out of batteries. You wouldn’t want to go back to your hotel just to recharge your devices. With this portable charger, you can charge anywhere and anytime. Pretty convenient!
4. Stylish Raincoat
New Yorkers are well-versed in the importance of fashion and style. Because of this, even the most casual of outfits and outerwear will likely leave you feeling out of place. Keep this fashionable raincoat on hand. It makes you look good and provides water and wind protection in case it rains.
5. Comfortable Flats
Flats are a great choice for everyday wear, especially if you’re on your feet a lot. They’re also a good choice for dressier occasions when you want to avoid the pain of heels. But not all flats are created equal. Some are much more comfortable than others. We recommend getting this comfortable slip-on flat.
6. Water Bottle With Filter
If you’re traveling, it’s important to stay hydrated. But what if the water isn’t safe to drink? Bring along a water bottle with a filter and you’ll be able to enjoy clean, fresh water wherever you go.

Packing for the Seasons
Below, we have also come up with some items to include in your NYC Packing List categorized by season.
Spring
Prepare for the frequent downpours from March through May. Bring a raincoat or umbrella. Also, bring a few extra layers because the weather is still warming up.
It is advisable to pack both long-sleeved and short-sleeved tops. And if you’re planning on walking a lot in NYC, wear shoes that are easy on your feet. Fashionable boots, bootie heels, and dressier sandals should be on your footwear list
NOTE: In March, the average temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). It rises about 10 degrees Fahrenheit monthly.
Summer
During the sweltering summer months of July to August, wear light, breathable clothing and bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.
Dresses are also a great choice to bring since they’re lightweight and versatile enough to wear the entire day.
Keep your bottoms cool and breathable. Pack a flowy skirt, lightweight pants, or these casual wide-leg pants.
New York hosts numerous parades, concerts, and festivals so make sure to add these to your itinerary!
NOTE: In the summer, the average temperature ranges from 80°F to 85°F (27°C to 29°C).
Autumn
You may want to bring a few sweaters and light coats from September to November. Although there is a minimal chance of snowfall, bring a few extra layers of clothing to keep warm.
NOTE: The average monthly temperature drops by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit beginning in September and averages 55-75 degrees Fahrenheit in October (13-24°C).
Winter
There is no doubt that temperatures will be at their lowest from December to February. Because of this, it is best to have a heavy coat, waterproof shoes, and warm accessories like hats and gloves to withstand the wind. Ideally, you’d want to bring waterproof boots in case of an unexpected snowstorm or rain.
A casual bootie heel looks great for the night and keeps your feet warm! But if you plan to stay outside to watch the Times Square ball drop on New Year’s Eve, make sure there’s enough clothing to keep you comfortable.
NOTE: The average temperature during winter months ranges from 35°F to 45°F (2-4°C to 7°C)
What You Shouldn’t Pack
Here are some things you don’t need to pack and save enough space for essential things:
Bulky Products/Toiletries
In New York City, you don’t need to pack full-size toiletries, not unless you’ll spend a few months there. Aside from the fact that it’ll take up a lot of room in your suitcase, it’s also heavy. We recommend storing your favorite products in small travel-size containers.
Excessive Clothes
Most people pack excessive clothing for a trip, only to realize that they could only wear some of them when they arrive. It would be best if you reduced the weight of your luggage by being selective about the items you bring.
Bath Towel
Most hotels in NYC provide towels. However, if you insist on bringing your own, go with a towel that dries quickly rather than a standard one since they’re lighter and need less space than a regular one.
Unnecessary Valuables
When packing for a trip, leave behind anything you won’t use much, such as electronics and jewelry, at home. You don’t want to risk losing or having your things stolen while you’re on the road, so you should avoid packing unnecessary items.
Uncomfortable Shoes
Expect that you will be walking a lot during your trip to NYC so leave those uncomfortable shoes at home!
