Annoyed with airport check-in now that everyone is anxious to travel post-pandemic? It seems that the crowds are more intense, and the security lines never end. Here are 10 tips to move past the crowd with confidence and speed.

Airport Check-in During Pandemic

Before the Airport

1. Check-in and get your seat online in advance

Checking in will eliminate the anxiety of wondering if you will have to sit in the last seat in the back of the plane. If you aren’t sure where the best seats are on the plane, check out Seat Guru. At this website, just enter your airline, flight number, and date, and it’ll show you a color-coded seat map and seat reviews from other fliers.

2. Bring your food

We all know how expensive airport food can be. Not only that, you can ensure you have what you want to eat.

3. Bring your headphones

Many airlines offer free in-flight entertainment, but not all of them provide headphones for free. To save money and keep yourself entertained during a long flight, pack your headphones.

4. Get the TSA-Pre-check or Global Entry

If you have TSA-Pre-check or Global Entry, you will pass the crowd and long lines and move to the front. It is well worth the investment of $85-$100 for either if you make a couple of trips a year. It eliminates the hassle of removing your shoes and taking out your liquids for inspection.

5. Pay for checked luggage online

Stop being annoyed with airport check-in by going straight to baggage drop-off if you paid for checked luggage online. You can go direct to TSA security line to pass the crowd if you have a carry-on.

If it isn’t clear which line you should be in, don’t hesitate to ask an employee for help. It’s better to take a moment to ask than waste time standing in the wrong line.

Screening Line Preparation

6. Go to the line on your left and avoid queues with families and kids

Here’s a tip (if you don’t have TSA-pre-check) on choosing which line to get in for scanning your luggage.

Most people go to the line on the right. Be sure to look to your left and avoid queues with families and kids; they will need more time. Try to follow the business travelers or those who look like experienced travelers; they move faster.

7. Remember the TSA 3:1:1 rule

Remember the TSA 3:1:1 rule for liquids when packing. You can only bring onboard liquids that are 3.4 ounces or less, 1 quart-size, clear, plastic, zip-top bag (all liquids must fit in the bag) 1 bag per passenger.

8. Wear slip-on shoes

If you dread taking off your shoes in the security line, make your life a little easier and wear slip-on shoes. Slip-on, slip-off. Be sure you wear socks, so you don’t have to walk on the dirty floor.

9. The right luggage matters

Four Wheels are better than two. This way, you can avoid dragging your bag and push it in front of you. Not only that, but you can stack your item or backpack on top, making it easier to navigate and get through the airport. This is one of my favorites.

10. Check if you’re eligible to airport lounges

Airport Lounges can give you a little respite before boarding the plane. Many credit cards and airline loyalty programs provide free or discounted access to airport lounges. Before your flight, enjoy complimentary beverages and snacks. Check with your credit card company ahead of time to see if you’re eligible.
