The white sand beach in Cartagena was my first stop across the street from my hotel. A foot or shoulder massage session right on the beach, the massage ladies were waiting for me. Most beaches are open to the public, and many vendors are available so that you can purchase gifts.

The hotels reserve private areas for guests if you want to avoid crowds. I made it my business to take a walk to the beach to feel the energy of the beautiful people of Colombia. I love watching its stunning sunrise and sunset. That was my daily routine.

Some vendors want to get you drinks, local food, beach chairs, and massages on the sand. And I didn’t realize I needed to negotiate with the massage ladies.

I was glad to help the local economy since I spent more money on the massage than expected. If you don’t want to engage with the tourists and the vendors, you can stay in the private area reserved by your hotel. Our hotel was the Hotel Caribe by Faranda Grand.

Rosario Islands

If you want a day from the crowds, many beaches in Cartagena with beautiful white sand are perfect for relaxing, sunbathing, getting a massage, or enjoying water sports.

There are more than 20 beaches to visit on five island complexes. You can spend the day at the beach with anyone on a short boat ride from the city. There are the islands of Rosario, Baru’ and San Bernardo.

Out of the five islands, we chose to go to Rosario. We had to pack a small bag with plenty of suntan lotion, sunglasses, and a swimsuit. We took a speedboat to Rosario Islands, spent the day on the beach, and got amazing massages! Take a look at the ride’s video and the island’s arrival.

El Totumo Mud Volcano

If you are on a tight budget or simply looking for an unusual experience in Cartagena, Colombia, consider getting a massage inside the El Totumo Mud Volcano.

El Totumo’s location is about 40 minutes outside Cartagena by bus (you can also take a taxi), and it is well worth the trip. It’s simply a mud pit with water fountains at one end that bubbles over into the mud now and then.

The real attraction, though, is what you’ll find when you get there. People were offering massages!
