Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is a must-see tour. San Felipe Castle looked ominous and reminded me of forts that I have seen in other parts of the world. But this world heritage site was different. Standing on the streets looking at the fortress, you get the impression that it is a Spanish Army home.
It is a rather steep climb to get to the top. At one point, I thought that I would look from the bottom. As I watched my tour group traverse the steep incline, I saw a couple of older ladies doing the climb, so I felt that I couldn’t stand here at the bottom if they can make it.
I had to create my own experience since I lost my guide and the group. I took my time, took the self-guided audio tour, and took selfies in the tunnels. Making it to the top was worth it.

“Old Boots” Monument
Famed engineer Antonio de Arevalo designed the San Felipe Castle. The tunnels’ design was so that any noise would carry the tunnels’ entire length to alert the Spanish that the enemy was coming.
The Spanish built San Felipe in several phases, starting in 1656. Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is considered one of the world’s incredible military wonders.
After the fort was pillaged for 50 days by Sir Francis Drake, the British pirate, the Spanish Crown bolstered the city’s defenses; by enlarging San Felipe in 1762. Cartagena became well-fortified. The most crucial port, Cartagena, was the nexus for the Spanish flotillas that transported gold.
When I reached the top, there were some incredible city views. You’ll need to get your tickets online before you get to Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas. Definitely wear some comfortable shoes.
Don’t forget to see the “Old Boots Monument” across the street from Castillo de San Felipe. Dedicated to the Colombian Poet Luis Carlos Lopez and inspired by his famous poem, “My Hometown Be sure to take a photo inside the bronze boots for fun.”
