We all struggle with smart packing for our next trip. While it is exciting to go on vacation, I would like to find one person who gets excited about packing. If you are like most women, you probably overpack and carry more clothes than you ever wear.

After taking many trips dragging luggage on and off planes and trains, I have learned a few things.

Learning the following smart packing tips is as much about what not to take as it is about what to take. It is a skill that you get better with over time.

There are two important things when trip planning, packing, and safety (read more on this in our article about solo travel safety).

Of course, you might imagine that there is some psychology to this also. Here are a few things to consider when you are smart packing for your next trip:

Make a list of what not to forget

Make a list to reduce your chances of forgetting something; check things off as you go. The last thing you want is for something to be left behind when traveling.

To avoid this from happening, make a list of items that will need to go with you in your carry-on or checked bag. This should include the essentials such as medications, glasses and contact lenses, travel documents, etc.

Pack earlier

Don’t wait until the last minute to start packing. Give yourself as much time as possible to pack for your trip. Try to finish packing a day early, and don’t forget any needed travel documents!

Layout your clothes

Layout the clothes you think you will want to take on your trip. Then go through them and reduce them by half. You can wear pants more than once, so save some space.

Don’t pack anything for “just in case”; if you don’t have it, you will work with what you have and still look great!

Don’t take more clothing than necessary; consider how often you will be wearing certain items and only pack those that you know you will wear.

Roll your clothes

Roll your clothes instead of layering them to save space in your luggage. I highly recommend purchasing packing cubes; they allow you to stay organized and your garments tightly packed. You can also use them in your hotel drawers to find things easily.

Pack light

Consider the weather conditions of your destination and pack accordingly. Wearing layers is a good way to cut down on bulk in your luggage, but make sure you have enough to keep you warm in cold weather! Also, stick to one carry-on bag for ease of transport.

Pack mini toiletries

Buy some cheap plastic bottles, label them, and pour your lotions and conditioners into the smaller bottles for your trip. You will have what you need without having to lug the full-size bottles. This works great if you are trying to take only a carry-on as well.

Protect your gear

No matter what type of electronic devices are on your packing list, protect them by wrapping them in clothing or blankets during transit. This will help prevent scratches and other damage that could affect the function of the item.

Pack a carry-on bag with the essentials

Pack your toiletries, medicines, and a change of clothes in your carry-on. This will give you some insurance if your bags get lost.

Consider your dirty shoes and clothes

Put a couple of travel laundry bags in your luggage for dirty shoes or clothes when returning home. You don’t want to mess up your souvenirs.

Avoid packing too many shoes

As I travel, one of the first things I think about is my feet and wanting to be sure that I can withstand all of the airport walking. Packing too many shoes is a common mistake that women make.

You don’t need a different pair of shoes for each outfit. Think comfort than style. If you are going on a vacation with water sports, a pair of water shoes is a good option, along with a good walking shoe and a pair of sandals (neutral color).
