Long layovers are like a two-for-one deal. They offer the opportunity to explore an additional country along the way, possibly one you’d never imagined visiting if you leave the airport.

However, if you don’t know what you’ll have to deal with ahead of time and plan carefully, you might miss your flight and destination. It could be long enough for you to wonder, can you leave the airport during a layover?

When booking a flight with a layover, you have a lot to think about. Direct flights are always preferable, but you may be forced to make a layover due to cost or distance. And sometimes, the layover is lengthy. Also, how do you know when you can leave the airport on a layover? Read on to find the answer!

So, can you leave the airport during a layover?

The simple answer is that it depends. Whether or not you can leave the airport during your layover is determined by various criteria, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. But let me guide you in making a wise decision.

Things to Consider When Leaving the Airport

Consider the following factors below before departing from the airport:

Length of the Layover

If your layover is only a few hours, don’t get off the plane. Don’t take the chance. You’ll need that time to clear customs and accomplish other important activities. Also, if you leave the airport and return, you’ll have to go through security again.

Before you go, ask yourself if you truly have time for it. You don’t want to experience the hassle of missing your connecting flight!

Although it may be tempting to see as many places as possible, consider how horrible it would be to be stranded in a strange nation. Also, pay extra money to arrange a new trip at the last minute.

Visa

You should check ahead of time to discover if you’ll require a visa to enter the country you’re visiting. Check with your countries to find out the admission requirements for your layover country.

Some countries need visas, even for brief stays, while others do not. Furthermore, you may pay for your visa in certain countries when you arrive, but many locations require advance arrangements.

Time of Day

Before you leave your layover, consider the time of the day. It’s not a good idea to explore a city yourself if it’s already dark, and there’s not much to do anyway.

If it’s already night, find a safe and comfortable place within the airport to try to sleep. Some airports even offer sleeping spaces!

Time Needed to Leave the Airport

Most airlines require you to arrive two hours early for an international trip, and it will most likely take you an hour to get out of the airport after you arrive.

Also, there’s an additional time for transit to and from a place (which might vary greatly). For instance, you’ll most likely consume a few hours to leave the airport and a few more hours to explore during a layover.

In any case, you must allow plenty of time for your return to the airport to ensure that you do not miss your next flight.

Luggage

If you’re getting off the plane during a long layover, you probably don’t want to tote your baggage with you the entire time. So, what’s the alternative?

First, check with the airline to see if they will transfer your checked luggage from one aircraft to the next. In most circumstances, they will still move your luggage.

However, if your layover is too long, the airline may be unable to tag it to your ultimate destination. This usually occurs when the second trip departs more than 24 hours following the first journey.

Still, regardless, you should confirm how the airline manages your checked luggage.

Boarding Restrictions

Many international airports will have certain time requirements for arriving at the gate.

For instance, in the US, there are 15 minutes to 30 minutes requirements. But the restrictions for certain overseas airports can be considerably more stringent.

Budget

You must also ask yourself how much money you only have to spend if you miss your flight. Also, how much money do you have to pay for the lounge and taxi fare?

If you’re on a tight budget, be sure that if you plan to get off the plane during the layover, you’ll be able to bear all its consequences.

Security

Domestic travelers are unlikely to go through security again unless they must move to a different gate outside the hub where their initial aircraft lands.

On the other hand, international travelers will almost certainly have to go through security checks once more.

Lounges

Do you have a first-class ticket? You should visit the Al Safwa First Lounge if you are traveling on Qatar Airlines, which features private bedrooms, à-la-carte cuisine, and distinctive architecture.

If you have more time, stay at the four-star Oryx Airport Hotel, located within the DOHA, Qatar airport. A full-size pool and a spacious fitness center with various equipment, including two squash courts, are available to guests.

Immigration and Customs

If you are returning to the United States, you should consider how long you must wait to pass immigration and customs. The first stop you pass through when you enter a nation is an immigration.

This is where your passport is scanned and stamped, and you must explain to a CBP official that you are not a drug mule.

Depending on where you are and when you arrive, these lines can be quite long at times, but the average wait time is approximately 20 minutes.

Country of Layover

As mentioned, some restrictions depending on the country you have a layover.

So, always have a thorough research of these countries to have a hassle-free and worry-free wandering. Furthermore, since the pandemic is prevailing, some countries might not allow a layover.

Best Cities to Explore on a Layover

Some cities around the main airport are ideal for exploring during a long layover.

Singapore

Singapore Airport is a key hub for flights across Asia, Europe, and Oceania, making it an ideal spot to visit during a stopover.

A 12-hour layover is enough to see major destinations, including Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown, and Kampong Glam. They are so well-equipped for layovers that they even provide a complimentary 5.5-hour excursion from the airport.

London

Heathrow and Gatwick are London’s two major international airports. Both airports provide rail connections that will take you immediately into the city, with a 45-minute journey from either to Green Park underground station or another nearby station.

Also, there is a lot to do in London, so a layover will always require compromising. If you go out with a few specific goals in mind, you can visit some main sites.

Canada

This Canadian airport will likely be the ideal stopover if you’re a fan of marine life. The Vancouver Aquarium operates two displays at the Vancouver airport: 1,800-liter jellyfish aquariums and a 114,000-liter tank. That aquarium houses over 5,000 animals such as wolf eels, kelp greenlings, sea stars, sea urchins, and anemones.

Maldives

When you’re greeted by an ocean breeze and vivid blue lagoons, a layover is anything but ordinary. Velana International Airport, The Maldives’ international gateway, is a terrific spot to spend a few hours or maybe half a day.

Priority pass lounges are accessible at international and domestic airports. Their open design allows for fresh air to lift your spirits. Furthermore, Priority Pass lounges provide many benefits, ranging from food and beverage credits to admission to a lounge with spa services.

Hong Kong

The airport in Hong Kong is very high-tech, with magic mirrors that allow you to see how different cosmetics or apparel appear on you. With its easy access to public transit, the international travel center is also highly efficient. If you have five or six hours, I recommend a quick trip to neighboring Disneyland.

Nonetheless, because the park is on the same island as the airport, you can ride the MTR subway train directly from the terminal to the theme park’s front gates in around 30 minutes. Also, there’s even a kiosk where you can leave your bags for the day while riding coasters and seeing performances.

Amsterdam

With so many fantastic sites close to the city center, visiting the sights of Amsterdam is a pretty achievable aim for a layover. Damrak, the city’s main thoroughfare, lies just before the station, the National War Memorial, Royal Palace, Anne Frank Museum, and the famed Red Light District.

Qatar

For those with extra time and money, this layover is ideal. You’ll get access to the Al Mourjan Business Lounge in the airport if you travel on Qatar Airways business class. In this lounge, you’ll find luxury showers, nap pods, a spacious dining area, and a high-end bar.

Do you have a ticket for a first-class flight? The Al Safwa First Lounge, which has private rooms, à-la-carte cuisine, and unique architecture, is a must-see. Stay at the four-star Oryx Airport Hotel, located inside the airport, if you have additional time. Guests get access to a full-size pool and a large fitness facility with a variety of equipment, including two squash courts.

Doha’s airport also features a range of duty-free stores and some of the world’s funkiest airport art, including a 23-foot bronze teddy bear sitting inside a light.

Atlanta, Georgia

At first sight, this Atlanta airport may appear like any other major U.S. travel center, but what distinguishes it from others is its homage to recorded history. This location is a themed restaurant with real ancient Atlanta old-guard.

It would also be beneficial if you visited The Varsity. This downtown Atlanta institution is known as the “World’s Largest Drive-In Restaurant,” It serves up classics like chili dogs, onion rings, and creamy milkshakes known as “Frosted Oranges.” The airport location of Paschal’s is also worth a visit.

FAQs

Layover vs. Stopover: What’s the difference?

A layover is shorter between flights that usually lasts less than 12 hours. In contrast, a stopover is a time of up to three days that are frequently provided by airlines at no additional expense. This allows you to incorporate an extra stop into your itinerary and is a great way to spend a few days exploring another city.

How long does a layover need to be to leave the airport?

It’s a good idea to be at the airport at least two hours in advance of your international flight, as it can take up to an hour to get out of the airport. So, if you’re planning to leave the plane during a layover, you must have a few more hours.

Is it illegal to get off at a layover?

Booking a flight to depart from the layover location rather than the final destination. Thus, getting off at a layover is not illegal, but there are certain aspects to consider before making it a habit. Nonetheless, others believe that a hidden city ticketing activity is a cunning approach to save money.

Is a 3-hour layover enough time to leave the airport?

Overall, I would not recommend leaving the airport if you have a 3 hours layover. However, in rare circumstances, if an airport is located in the city, you may walk directly out of the airport, eat supper for 30–40 minutes, and then hurry back in.

Even so, if this is a large airport, traveling to the airport, through security, and then to the terminal (vice versa) might take quite some time. So, if you want to make the most of your layover time, you should have considerably more time.

Plan your Layover Wisely

In general, the answer to the question of whether you may leave the airport during a long layover is yes, but only if the layover is long. The explanation is simple: the procedures you must undergo may take a long time, leaving you with little time to explore the city, which may be dangerous.

If you’re unsure if you can leave the airport during a layover, consider the questions above. Because if you do not arrive on time, you will miss your trip and be stranded in a distant city or country at the full expense of another plane.

You don’t want that because you must have picked a connecting flight to save money. If you have enough safe time to go around, don’t waste time and go!

Note:

Please remember that the laws and restrictions for entering certain countries continually change due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic. Because of that, you’ll need to confirm the admission criteria, including testing and vaccinations. This may imply that you cannot leave the airport during your layover.

It’s also a good idea to look into the condition of the place where you’ll be spending your layover. If possible, leaving the airport may not be a good idea, or the city may have tourism limitations. Any of these factors might make your lengthy stopover difficult, unpleasant, or even reckless.
