If you want to try hiking, Via Ferrata is the climbing route to explore Mount San Salvatore. You can also climb to the mountain’s peak, but you have to use the railroad or funicular. 

The funicular is located in Paradiso, which can be reached by walking from Lugano. When you reach the top, you’ll be able to enjoy a 360-degree view of the mountain. 

Pilatus 

Overlooking Lucerne located in Central Switzerland is Mount Pilatus. It has the most prominent peak in the area and is a famous tourist attraction. 

You can get to Pilatus either by a cogwheel railway or a tram. When you reach the peak, you can try riding Switzerland’s longest summer toboggan, go hiking, and enjoy the scenery from different viewpoints.

There are four ways to reach the top of Mt. Pilatus: hiking, cableway cogwheel railway, or a roundtrip ride through the cogwheel train, boat, and cableway.

Eiger

Eiger, a part of the Bernese Alps in Berne canton, is one of the world’s most popular and iconic mountains. It’s also known as Eigerwand or Nordwand. This mountain is famous for its 1800m north face of rock and ice.

The Eiger provides breathtaking views of massive glaciers and fields, including the villages in Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen.

Breithorn

Breithorn is the ideal mountain to climb for beginners. It sits on the border between Italy and Switzerland and is frequently climbed by new hikers. This mountain is easily accessible, especially through the ski resort in the nearby town of Zermatt. 

Matterhorn

3. Riffelsee, which is slightly far away from the main hiking routes.

The only way to get to Matterhorn’s peak is through climbing. However, this mountain is not advisable for beginners as the route can get challenging. It has a 3000m elevation. You’d have to be prepared physically and psychologically to climb it.

Mount Lema

Mount Lema is a famous mountain destination for hang-gliding lovers and mountain bikers. It comprises part of Lugano Prealps and is ideal for all hikers, from beginners to professional ones. There are several trails and routes to reach the peak of Mount Lema. 

This mountain is considered the most striking summit in Italian Switzerland. Reaching its green terrace allows you to see the majestic views of the following:

  • Southern Valleys of Ticino
  • Lake Lugano
  • Luino Valleys
  • Lake Maggiore

It also serves as the starting point of other famous routes to different mountain ranges. One of the famous hikes that it leads to is the Traversata hike, leading to Mount Tamaro. 

Jungfrau

Jungfrau is another famous peak of the Bernese Alps located along the border of the cantons of Bern and Valais. It’s one of the most famous skylines in Switzerland, with a towering peak visible from almost anywhere in the Alps.

It is also called “the top of the world.” This popular mountain destination looks best during the summer. If you plan to visit the Jungfrau region, make sure to book your tickets and tours in advance.

By train is the only way to get to Jungfrau. If you are traveling by car, you will have to leave your vehicle in Grindelwald. From there, take a train to Kleine Scheidegg, then switch to Jungfraujoch railway train to finally see the beauty of this mountain. 

Monte Rosa

Monte Rosa, a large massif, is the highest peak in Switzerland, located along the border of Italy and Switzerland. It’s the second-highest mountain in the Alps, next to Mont Blanc. Within this massif are multiple summits.

This mountain is a popular trekking and climbing destination for climbers and non climbers. If you want to try climbing in elevations that are not too high, consider trekking at Monte Rosa as part of your adventure. 

Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi, located in Central Switzerland near Zurich and Luzern, is most locals’ Queen of the Mountains. You can visit this mountain all year round as it has the best weather conditions in almost every season. 

If you plan to visit, head to Mount Rigi in the morning because it gets covered by clouds at noon. An option to get to the mountain top is through the cogwheel train. Mount Rigi is also an ideal destination for non-climbers and first-time travelers. You can certainly enjoy Switzerland’s nature when you visit this mountain destination. 

Finsteraarhorn

Finsteraarhorn, Switzerland’s most prominent peak, is a rugged mountain located in the Bernese Alps. It forms part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site and is mostly surrounded by glaciers. 

From a distance, you can immediately see the peak of Finsteraarhorn because of its shark fin appearance. 

Mount Parsen

Mount Parsen is one of the favorite mountains of skiers. It’s more commonly famous as a ski resort. If you want to try skiing, Parsen is certainly the place to be.

The best time for you to visit Mount Parsen is from the last week of November to April; the mountain becomes available for people to go skiing or enjoy the view. You can reach this mountain from Davos by taking the Parsenn’s funicular railway and riding the Gotschna cable car from Kloster. 

Mount Piz Nair 

Piz Nair is located in the Southeastern region of Switzerland, and it is one of the most beautiful mountains in St. Moritz. 

The best time to visit this mountain is during early Autumn, and you can reach its summit by riding a cable car or taking two funicular railway routes.
